Art Opening: Love Lines Tonight at RedLine

With an opening tonight from 6PM-9PM at Redline, the Valentine's appropriate Love Lines exhibit plays matchmaker between Denver and the art world at large. The group show does what many in Colorado attempt and rarely achieve: pairing local, national and international artists together cohesively. Curated by one of Denver's preeminent contemporary art heavyweights, Robischon Gallery, three distinct interests become apparent in this assembled lineup. A selected group of artists (Halim Alkarim, Jack Balas, Xiong Lijun, Xing Danwen, Yu Fan, Ann Hamilton, Wes Hemperel, Jerry Kunkel, He Jian) represents the gallery's stable of talent. Another clique (Jeff Page, Jonathan Saiz, Ian Fisher, Terry Campbell) draws upon RedLine's coterie of Denver based artist residents, including its director and founder Laura Merage.  A third contingent of non-affiliated artists makes up the difference, including locals, nationals and internationals. A couple of big names add star power to the lot, including the deceased New Mexican artist, Luis Jimenez, who was killed in 2006 by his polarizing equestrian scultpure, "Blue Mustang", which he constructed for the Denver International Airport; the shockingly personal Young British Artist, Tracey Emin; and famed sculptor and printmaker Kiki Smith (one of her prints was chosen for the exhibits promotional materials) who first came to prominence as part of the New York City based Colab in the late 1970's and early 1980's, and has since shown in just about every major contemporary art space around the world. Whether or not the Robischon/RedLine couple successfully played cupid for the Colorado scene will have to wait, as it's 7PM on the night of the opening, and as usual, I'm late!
