Denver Fashion Week?
About three months agoI heard of a Denver Fashion Week happening October 8th- 12th in Civic Center Park.
Overwhelmed with splendor, I paid the $25 application fee and applied online. I proceeded to e.mail Shaunie Cobb (the head of BlackWhite Design Companies, the entity that was going to produce the whole event), requesting if I could conduct an interview/feature on Denver Fashion Week for Illiterate's media site. We got in touch and she agreed to meet up at City 'O City with Renee Mudd & I for a mini photo shoot and a quick interview over a cup of tea.
I met up with Renee, and we sat over Pablo's brew wondering if Shaunie Cobb was someone sitting elsewhere in the cafe, since we had both never met nor heard of her. We had a grand old morning, and talked about the history of "people-trying-to-have-a-fashion-week-in-denver and then it never-really-happening." As the lunch rush started swarming in, we determined it was a no show and left a little disappointed.
I returned home to find an e.mail from Shaunie requesting to re.schedule. We tried, and it never happened. I e.mailed her questions, I never got any answers.
On August 17th I received an e.mail from Shaunie Cobb, informing us that Denver Fashion Week had been cancelled. At this point, it was no surprise to me because I had been asking around town if anyone had ever met or heard of Shaunie Cobb or BlackWhite Design Companies. No one had... Strange. Personally, I had started my own little conspiracy theory on Denver Fashion Week, starting to believe this thing was a big hoax and I was the sucker who paid twenty five bucks. I replied back by requesting my $25 application fee be refunded. Ms. Cobb e.mailed me back asking for my address to send a check. I never got one... maybe it got lost in the mail.
I still would like answers to some of my questions as well :
1. What is the relationship between Denver Fashion Beat and Denver Fashion Week? How did the two entities become involved?
If you, or anyone you know knows the answers to these questions, feel free to e.mail me:
baily@illiteratemagazine.com
This curious mind of mine would just love some answers, because all I can think about is how I wished I had been sitting in Civic Center Park all this Sunday watching Denver Fashion set against Colorado's crispy cold blue sky & frail falling leaves in the sunshine. It would have been fash-abulous (Fashion + Fabulous).
Will Denver ever have a Fashion Week?

Hi Baily! I'm the publisher of Denver Fashion Beat, and I can tell you that we have no relationship to Shaunie Cobb at all, other than having been named as the press sponsors. We helped promote the event and even sent applications Shaunie's way, but were never involved in any of the planning of logistics. In fact, we were pressing hard to have the event resemble more of what a fashion week is supposed to be all about, which is an opportunity to write orders and not just entertainment filler. We at DFB are very opposed to stuffing fashion into nightclub events just to round out the evening, because there is considerable expense that local designers have to shell out in order to participate in such events, with little hope of return on investment. Generally speaking, the fashion events in Denver are badly marketed and rope local designers in without making it worth the designers' while. We tried to influence Shaunie Cobb away from that trend, because we are all about making local fashion as economically viable for the designer as possible. Hope that helps. I welcome any questions on our role as press sponsors...andrea@dfbeat.com. Thanks!
