DISCO TITS!

DISCO TITS!

This is going to be one of those summers. I can feel it. Denver is going to get back to it's natural state of partying all the time, just like things were a few years ago when DIY/Warehouse/Living/Retail/Party spaces like Garageland, Lost Lake, Hipster Youth Halfway House, Breakdown Books, Monkey Mania and countless other rad places were still in full effect, and free/cheap shows and epic on-the-DL dance parties happened every weekend.

Of course, Rhinoceropolis has been holding us together for years now, bringing the best bands in America (and Canada too! Like Totally Ripped who played last night!) to the legs and ears of kids and elder dudesmen alike. And there has been plenty of great house parties, and shows plus both FM and Illiterate have been good at keeping the party situation on lock. But I think it's time some new places appear, if only to shoulder some of the work that the Rhino kids put into setting up/cleaning up every show/party we live for. This blog can often sound like the cheerleader in love with star quarterback Travis Egedy, but there's a reason I/we love Pictureplane and Rhino so much: the shit is good.

And shit will only get better for the summer, and more parties and shows will happen. So let's start the early summer off right with two events this weekend that happen to not be at Rhino, but are sure to be just as rad.

It's EPIC dance party weekend, beginning this Friday, May 8th with Disco Nouveau run by DJs Tyler Snow and Mike Disco at Meadowlark. If the Meadowlark served food, I would never go anywhere else. This venue is so perfect.  And it's the just-right location for the monthly Nouveau dance party, as Tyler and Mike serve up the best cosmic disco and deep house tracks that you can't find anywhere else. The dance floor gets packed early and the crowd stays late, so pay the four bucks and come dance your ass off.

Then Saturday, May 9th, it's all about Glob (you know, the place directly next to Rhino who throws great parties/shows too?) for WE GOT THE BEAT! a benefit dance party extraordinaire! Under the guidance/vision of my good friend Sarah Slater, a bunch of cool kids started getting together a few months ago to plan a music festival like Denver has never seen before...and it's called Tit Wrench!

Our friend DJ Pantyliner is coming out of retirement to throw down the best booty bass/J-Lo inspired jams for all, and our own Tit Wrench crew, Gay Sunshine, will also be playing some tasty tracks on Saturday night. Totally fun, totally positive, totally dancable, totally safe, and totally worth the $5-10 sliding scale donation! Come dressed as your favorite lady rocker/groupie and enjoy the sweet dancing that will be going on from 10pm until wheneva.

The Tit Wrench music festival itself isn't until July 24th-26th, but we are raising money now with this magical dance party in an effort to pay the bands a little something that are coming from out of state to celebrate diversity, girlhood, humankind, and a love for all things art/music (especially stuff that makes you think/act/share/grow!) Annnnd, as a bonus, we will have a safe ride home van (courtesy of me!) to take any party-goers home who are maybe too tipsy to get behind the wheel. It's free of charge, and there's room for your bikes to get home safe and in one piece too! Drunk Driving= NO BUENO.

And one last note, our music editor, Yuzo Nieto, is organizing the Denver Does Denver Festival this June 6th. It's a sweet gathering of Denver bands playing 20 minute sets of other Denver band's songs. How radical is that?! Email Yuzo (yuzo@illiteratemagazine.com) for more info if you would like to participate.

Plus, our friend Lindsay who runs the Denver Show and Tell Project has joined with Yuzo and made this month's Show and Tell assignment to cover a Denver band's song too! To learn more about how the Denver Show and Tell Project works, visit the myspace, read the directions, sign up, and JUST DO IT. (You can also read a little bit about Lindsay and her cool cool project in an interview I did with her a bit ago.)
