Engaging People: Eric and Heather ChanSchatz
Last Thursday at the MCA Denver, visual artists Eric and Heather ChanSchatz delivered a talk about their process. The talk was mediated by former Whitney museum curator David A. Ross, who during the audience question-and-answer session, determined that “Visual art in the 21st century is about how to engage people.” Engaging people is what Eric and Heather ChanSchatz are all about. Friday at the DAM hang out with John McEnroe
If you've been by the Highland Bridge in the last six months then you're already familiar with the artwork of John McEnroe. It is there in a cement alcove at the base of the bridge, that the Denver artist's most well known and controversial sculpture stands erect: a towering mound of rouge painted, glow in the dark, plastic pods. Titled National Velvet, the piece has illicited both ecstactic reviews and heavy breathing from those who found the piece's phallic shape as cause for grunted diissaproval. Hey kids do you like violence? How about bloody carnage on canvas? Tonight head over to the MCA to view the visceral paintings of Barnaby Furnas, the 31 year old New York artist who creates mural sized battles between the figurative and abstract. After the overwhelming positive response we received from musicians and audience members after Illiterate's first music centered event: Denver Does Denver, back in June, we realized that the whole experience was pretty damn arousing. And with anything that feels good, we couldn't help but want to do it more often. And so, from now on the last Saturday of every month, Illiterate will be hosting a regular night of Aural Pleasure at Old Curtis Street Bar where our favorite bands and DJ's play the music we (and hopefully you) want to hear. The Denver Art Museum + The Fabric Lab present Untitled #23: "STYLE" WARS. 12 local designers will go head to head in a fashiontastic combat whilst DJ's the Postman and Wigdan Giddy battle it out musically. This is the most postmodern version of an Old School fashion show I've ever heard of. I'm giddy with excitement.
