The Street Art Revolution

The Street Art Revolution

With a style similar to cave painting, talented street artists embrace the thoughts of a new generation by painting the walls of our Denver metropolis.  With phrases like “I was here”, “These are the words that were on my mind”, and “This is what I cared about”, the works express what fills the minds of artists who unveil their sketches onto the drab walls of urban settings in order to transform those featureless landscapes into colorful expressions.   Most are written so that one can read them without much attention or practice, but because the trend in street art is to twist the alphabet into its own language, many pieces a...Read more

Engaging People: Eric and Heather ChanSchatz

Engaging People: Eric and Heather ChanSchatz

Last Thursday at the MCA Denver, visual artists Eric and Heather ChanSchatz delivered a talk about their process. The talk was mediated by former Whitney museum curator David A. Ross, who during the audience question-and-answer session, determined that  “Visual art in the 21st century is about how to engage people.”   Engaging people is what Eric and Heather ChanSchatz are all about. Their collaborative art transcends the boundaries that often develop between the art world and, well, the rest of the world. In creating one of their ultra-lightfast silkscreen paintings, ChanSchatz will meet at length with different communities of people: their collabor...Read more

Friday at the DAM hang out with John McEnroe

Friday at the DAM hang out with John McEnroe

If you've been by the Highland Bridge in the last six months then you're already familiar with the artwork of John McEnroe.  It is there in a cement alcove at the base of the bridge, that the Denver artist's most well known and controversial sculpture stands erect: a towering mound of rouge painted, glow in the dark, plastic pods.  Titled National Velvet, the piece has illicited both ecstactic reviews and heavy breathing from those who found the piece's phallic shape as cause for grunted diissaproval.  Regardless though whether the sculpture goes down in history as a conceptual triumph, or another public monument to the male member, right now, people are talking about it, and ...Read more

Art Opening: Barnaby Furnas

Art Opening: Barnaby Furnas

Hey kids do you like violence? How about bloody carnage on canvas? Tonight head over to the MCA to view the visceral paintings of Barnaby Furnas, the 31 year old New York artist who creates mural sized battles between the figurative and abstract. Furnas' first major notoriety came for ecstatic battle scenes,  gory and celebratory shootouts between variously exploding American civil war era icons, such as  Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. His most recent paintings have done away with any human reference aside from that most vital fluid of life, blood. In these large-scale paintings, which often stretch the entirety of a room, and then some, and can take weeks' ju...Read more

Is Richard Patterson a Big Baby About to Talk

Is Richard Patterson a Big Baby About to Talk

The guilty giggle of a boy who in an instant squeezed an entire case of paint tubes onto his favorite action figure mingles with the distilled silence of a master painter at work for hours throughout Richard Patterson's paintings. The process for these brightly photorealistic, globs of colored brush strokes, begins with Patterson smothering a kiche figurine in paint, photographing it, and then rendering a painting from the image: a reproduction of a reproduction of a reproduction, each time utilizing a different medium to reinterpret the last.  Patterson, an alumnus of Goldsmith college in London and member of the loosely affiliated group of beloved misfit artists, the YBA's (Young Brit...Read more

Illiterate Model on Americas Next Top Model

Illiterate Model on Americas Next Top Model

18 year old, Lousiville, Colorado native, Nicole Fox, who modeled in Illiterate's Love to Hate/ Hate to Love event at Red Line back in February, is now competing on America's Next Top Model!     (Above) Nicole modeling a Pam Gray design at Illiterate's Love to Hate/ Hate to Love event photo courtesy Rachel Paton   Nicole modeling on America's Next Top Model   Nicole's rise to the televised stage occurred quickly following her Illiterate debut (the show began shooting in Spring), and despite the fact that, as she mentions in her Top Model interview, she's brand new to modeling, her inexperience in the fashion industry shows little in photographs and on the runway...Read more

Aural Pleasure

Aural Pleasure

After the overwhelming positive response we received from musicians and audience members after Illiterate's first music centered event: Denver Does Denver, back in June, we realized that the whole experience was pretty damn arousing. And with anything that feels good, we couldn't help but want to do it more often.  And so, from now on the last Saturday of every month, Illiterate will be hosting a regular night of Aural Pleasure at Old Curtis Street Bar where our favorite bands and DJ's play the music we (and hopefully you) want to hear. Come check out the first installment in this series this Saturday August 29th as Bitch Yes! Jonathan +Bpro and DJ Peter Black get the dance floor convul...Read more

Denver Does Denver Recorded!

Denver Does Denver Recorded!

Thanks to Lance over at The Flat Response, a majority of the music from Denver Does Denver, illiterate's night of song swapping at Old Curtis St. and Bar Bar back on June 6 , is now available for your listening pleasure. Re-live almost all of the magical madness here. My personal highlights included:   1. The Legendary River Drifters unexpectedly jerking a heart string or two with Onemana's Cummdumpster 2. Safeboating is No Accident's old timey jangle of Pictureplane's neon dance anthem Day Glowed 3. Doo Crowder, the mild mannered songsmith channeling the fire for Pirate Signal's Yonnas  4. Ian Cooke crooning Rachel Pollard's love lament the Sea Surged 5. The Pink Hawks' hau...Read more

DAM Announces Untitled 23:

DAM Announces Untitled 23:

This just in!     The Denver Art Museum + The Fabric Lab present Untitled #23: "STYLE" WARS.   12 local designers will go head to head in a fashiontastic combat whilst DJ's the Postman and Wigdan Giddy battle it out musically.   This is the most postmodern version of an Old School fashion show I've ever heard of.   I'm giddy with excitement. And a little nervous of course, since I'm a fashion whore for attention and I'm competing in it! More information to come......Read more
